Help understanding web permissions

HI, If I need to give a user permissions to FTP files to his website, how do
I give him the correct permissions. I know I need to give him access to his
website folder. But do I need to give him access to the inetpub and wwwroot
folder since these are before his website folder. And if so, what are the
least amount of permissions I can give so that he can FTP his files.

Thanks for any help trying to understand permissions a bit better.
