Hi,

I'm getting a similar problem as well. I'll try to give as much detail
as possible.

First, I'm on XP Pro SP1 and my computer is used for development and
testing sites I'm working on. I use a variety of virtual directories for
this.

So, I open the MMC by going to Start>Administrative Tools>Internet
Information Services because I need to create a new virtual directory
just like I did several times before without problem. I start to unfold
the tree structure and when I open the "Web Sites" folder I see a "stop
sign" shaped red icon with "error" written in it and it's labeled [Site
#1] and none of my virtual directories nor any IIS' default items
appear. In the right pane is the following info: under IP Address it
says *All Unassigned", port is 80 and status says "An attempt was made
to lad a program with an incorrect format". Both "State" and "Host
Header name" are empty. Right clicking on the "Web Sites" folder or the
"error" icon and selecting "Properties" brings up an error dialog that
says "Key not valid for use in specified state". Clicking OK crashes MMC.

Additional details:

When I try to browse to any of my sites located in virtual directories
(using IE or any other browser) they load up fine but if I try to load
IIS' default page (http://localhost) I get a "Page cannot be displayed"
error page and the info at the bottom goes like this:

"Technical Information (for support personnel)

Error Type:
(0x8009000B)
Key not valid for use in specified state.
/localstart.asp, line 40

Browser Type:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)

Page:
GET /localstart.asp

Time:
March 26, 2004, 7:41:04 PM"

Line 40 in localstart.asp goes like this:

sPath = "IIS://" & sServername & "/W3SVC/" & sServerinst

Needless to say I'm stumped and I have no idea what to do. I could
manage my server and create and edit virtual directories only days ago
without problem. I have not installed any new software and haven't
changed anything to my computer's config that I can remember. I do think
I installed the latest Office XP update (post SP3) for the Microsoft
Script Editor debugger (KB833858) but I doubt that's what caused it. I
don't believe I have loaded the MMC after doing that until today though.

I'd appreciate any help or pointers anyone could give me on this.

Thanks in advance!
