I just installed Windows 2003 R2 Standard DC server. On it I
installed IIS 5 with SMTP server.
IIS 6, I'm sure.
I even have Outlook installed on the server and it works. I can drop
a test email in the smtp queue and it will sit there also never
moves. I think the end up in the badmail folder. This is a home
network so I do not have a business account with my isp.
A mail server performing direct delivery is not the same as a mail
client like Outlook.
With a consumer-level connection and little SMTP and DNS experience,
it's very unlikely that you will ever pass the PTR-EHLO-A roundtrip
necessary for reliable outbound direct delivery (see the archives of
this newsgroup for profuse discussion).
Therefore, you would do best to set your machine to smarthost
everything through your ISP's server. To do so requires not only that
Outbound Security be set with the appropriate credentials, but also
that you have the Smart Host set to your ISP's mail server (the same
hostname you use in Outlook). Do not check 'Attempt direct delivery
first.'
