I have only one smtp virtual server and using the _total counter. At
least I know that everything I do is correct.

Do you get the same results specifically choosing VS 1? I wonder if
you have a corrupt metabase entry for another VS that might be getting
totaled by mistake -- again, can't seem to trigger that discrepancy on
my end.
