Re: 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay

This depends on what server this log came from and which computer (by IP
address) is acting as the sender (client) or receiver (server)

If this log was from your relay server, and the receiving IP is the remote
party, it is their problem, they gave you the error.
If this log was from your relay server, and the receiving IP is your relay
server, it is your problem, investigate why your server is rejecting the
recipient domain. (You usually need to configure authentication.)
If this log was from your originating server, and the receiving IP is your
relay server, refer to the previous example.

Hi,

We experience a strange issue with the relay. We have an application that
sends an email to this recipient (subscription@xxxxxxx) via a relay (IIS
SMTP
Virtual server in Windows 2000 Server). It works fine and sometimes some
emails were rejected or dropped and we asked the remote server (recipient)
if
something is wrong from their side and they confirm that the problem is from
our side and all are ok from their side. If we perform again the same
action,
the email will be sent and alla are OK. We have this problem daily.

I opened the following file : c:\winnt\system32\smtpsvc1\ex061204.log
And I found some lines related to the email that was rejected or dropped or
was unable to be relayed:

25 MAIL - FROM:<user1@xxxxxxxx> 0 0 4 0 1859 SMTP
25 - - 250+2.1.0+user1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx+OK 0 0 45 0 2390 SMTP
25 RCPT - TO:<subscription@xxxxxxx> 0 0 4 0 2390 SMTP
25 - - 550+5.7.1+Unable+to+relay+for+subscription@xxxxxxx 0 0 73 0 2906 SMTP
25 RSET - - 0 0 4 0 2906 SMTP
25 - - 250+2.0.0+Resetting 0 0 19 0 3422 SMTP
25 QUIT - - 0 0 4 0 3484 SMTP
25 - - 421+SMTP+service+not+available,+closing+transmission+channel 0 0 60 0
563 SMTP
25 QUIT - - 0 0 4 0 563 SMTP

I have found 2 warnings related to this issue:

Sourec: smtpsvc
Event id : 4001
Message delivery to the remote domain 'subscription@xxxxxxx' failed. The
error message is 'An SMTP protocol error occurred.
'. The SMTP verb which caused the error is 'RCPT'. The response from the
remote server is '550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for subscription@xxxxxxx

Sourec: smtpsvc
Event id : 4000
Message delivery to the remote domain 'papa.com' failed for the following
reason: The connection was dropped by the remote host.

Have you any idea to fix this issue?? how can I look for the root of the
issue??

thanks,
Haydar
