Authentication Fails on Windows 2003 In-Built SMTP Service...

Hi, (basic) authetication always fails, although if I do not authenticate, I
am able to send to myself, and receive through the in-built POP3 service,
although relaying fails as it should. I have ensured that the domain is the
computer name, and have tried logging in without the @domain in the user name.
Why is the service not able to authenticate? I am not running any AD nor
Exchange bloatware, and I do NOT wish to set IPs or subnets to "allow relays".
Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks
