four of us, confidential/sensitive emails to each other must go out over the
Internet just to be routed back into the office to the proper network
computer. This is somewhat of an unnecessary security risk. However, we
think purchasing Exchange just for sending intraoffice email would be
overkill. I've been trying to think of some way we can send emails (or even
instant messages) to each other without our communications going out over
the Linksys router to the Internet. Sending encrypted email would solve
some of this problem to some extent, but having communications stay without
our local network would be better.

expensive server or changing email clients.

Yes, you can install IIS 6 (from Windows 2003). Since your intranet can have
faked IP configuration, you must have a DNS or a DHCP server, that provides
the correct MX configuration for mail clients. IIS6 supports POP3 and SMTP
which is sufficient to avoid that mail gets routed through external sources.
