Thanks, Ken. That's a good question. I assumed it was the SMTP service
because we have the NDR feature on the spam filter shut off. We're getting a
lot of messages in the BADMAIL folder on the spam filter/IIS5 box.

Inbound email goes through a separate SMTP anti-virus gateway and then is
forwarded to the spam filter/IIS box. The spam filter/IIS box then forwards
it to Exchange 5.5

Outbound email from Exchange does not route through either the spam
filter/IIS box or the SMTP gateways; it goes direct to the Internet.

So now I don't know where they are coming from.
