Re: Cannot connect to FTP server

Hi

Well i read the article you sent me but I am using IIS 5.1 on windows xp.
So, i guess its not applicable for this version if so let me know. I will do
some research in the meantime. The reason i want to do this is because if
someone needs to conncet to my FTP site than their use passive mode needs to
be unchecked. I was wondering if there is a way around.

Second question is can i not include a group in the sign in authentication
instead of just one user. In that way several people can log in with their
own username.

I am using XP IIS 5.1

thank you

a) the other way to configure passive mode is to customize the passiveport

b) For IIS FTP, it does support SSL yet. maybe in next version (7.0). for
now. you can either
use VPN or IPsec to secure the entire communication.

Hi Bernard

I have unchecked the use passvie FTP and since then it works. Thank you
for
you response. But i was just thinking if i check the use passive mode and
open ports in my router between 1024 and 5000. Should it work. And whats
the
diffrence anyway.

One more question, is IIS FTP a safe method to transfer file if I want to
use this at my office. I am just cocern about security. I heard SSL is a
better way to do this. Can you please suggest me.

Thank you
Andrew

so ftp.exe does works. Now, try this and see if IE works.

Select the 'enable folder view for ftp site'.

if it works. meaning passive mode ftp is not working. do you have
firewall
in between ?

Thank you for your reply

Ok i have ran the commands from a remote computer, the results are:

C:/>ftp.exe my ftp server ip address
connected to my ftp server ip address
220 Microsoft FTP service
User<ip address of ftp server:<none>>: i inputed my user name
331 password required for my username
Password: my password
230 user (my username) logged in
ftp>

gives me the same result when typ it from the ftp server itself. I read
about this commands somewhere i ran that earlier. To give you more
details

When i ran the command ftp>ls

it gives me
200 Port command successfull
150 opening ASCII mode data connection for file list
cottage-labour day 06 long weekend-( I have this folder in the ftproot
folder)
226 Transfer complete.
ftp: 36 bytes received in 0.036seconds 1.16Kbytes/sec
ftp>

It seems like it can see my folder in dos mode but when i do it from IE
it
cannot get contents of my folder. But as i said earlier it does allow
me
to
log in. In the security tap of the folders property i added the user
account
to have access to folder.

If you need more information just let me know.

thank you again.

Ok, skip IE first.
Try login in at command prompt via ftp.exe
c:\> ftp.exe yourftpserver

then post the output here.

Hi

I am recently playing wiht IIS and FTP. I have sucessfully setup IIS
and
FTP. What i did is i went to IIS managment console and expanded the
FTP
sites. Right clicked on Default sites, from there i entered teh IP
address
of
the machine that is being made into a FTP server and the port number
to
be
21. THen i went to security accounts tap and checked off "allow
anonymous
connection"(if i check that in than when i try to connect with the
ip
addes
than it gives me error message saying that "an error occured
opeining
that
folder on teh FTP server. Make sure you have permission to access
that
folder, if i check that off atleast it asks me to put my user name
and
password. So, i kept it checked off)

I have made a user account wthin the machine for the FTP log in. I
also
opened the port# 21 in my router. Now when i try to log in to my FTP
it
gives
a windows to log in but once the user name and password is inputed
it
searches for the folder and then gives me an error message" an error
occured
opeining that folder on teh FTP server. Make sure you have
permission
to
access that folder".

Please help, i don't know what i am doing wrong.

By the way the home folder is the c:\inetpub\ftproot. I have found
an
article saying that there are problems like this with IE 5.5 service
pack
2.
but i have IE 6.0 service pack 2.

please help
