What mode of transfer does your application use ? Active or passive ?

What exactly do you mean by 'logging in by hand' ? Which application
are you using ? A Windows FTP client ? The command line FTP client in
Windows ?

The best place to obtain troubleshooting information is in your log
files. Post the entries from the file here where the application fails
and where you log in 'by hand' and it succeeds. That should throw some
light on things. Does your application generate any logging
information which might help ?

I suspect that the problem is being caused by your router not allowing
traffic though on the ports required by your application. Refer to
this KB article for more information, particularly the section
entitled Common Problems Encountered With FTP :
