The problem now is that it does not compile in debug mode. I get the
ugly:

uuid.lib(mshtml_i.obj) : fatal error LNK1103: debugging information
corrupt; recompile module

Are you using VC6, by any chance? The latest Platform SDK is
incompatible with VC6. The last compatible release was February 2003:
