Application Hangs when Java Applet displays window

My WTL application which hosts the WebBrowser control hangs whenever a Java
applet tries to display a window.
The application with embedded browser control does just fine with any other
kind of popup window, just not from a java applet.
For example, going to java.com in the browser control, then opening the Java
Console, causes the console window to begin to appear (shows a caption) then
cpu usage jumps to 100% and stays there and the app is hung at that point.
The problem reproduces 100% on a clean install of Windows XP Home SP2 with
the latest JRE installed from Sun...
The same application works fine on other configurations, such as XP Pro, but
the repro is 100% on this particular config.
The problem does not reproduce when loading the same page directly into
Internet Explorer -- only when running in the browser control inside of my
app.
Any suggestions?
