Hi:
I found that the best way to stop Adwares' pop up windows in XP is to
install Free Pop-Up Blocker for IE from Netscape Corporation. (Although it
comes from competitor of IE, but it is working so well for IE. I am using IE
too). To install the blocker, do the following:
1.. Go to http://www.netscape.com
2.. In "Downloads of the Day", click "Free Pop-Up Blocker for IE". (If you
do not see the link, then search the netscape.com)
3.. Then click "Download Toolbar NOW!" Then IE browser will finish the
installation in very short time.
Make sure that there is only one IE browser opening during the
installation. If the installation is successful, then you should see
Netscape Toolbar appears on the menu area.
The software should stop all pop up from adwares. If you see "Pop-Up
Block Off" in the toolbar, you should click it, so it will turn to be
"Pop-Up Block On:" So the Blocker can also stop the pop up from the websites
you are visiting also.
Dependent on what kinds of Adwares infected in your computer, if you
close the IE browser, there are some pop up still show up. The reason is
that Blocker only work as long as the IE browser is running, if you close IE
browser, then Blocker is no longer running. So the Adwares can resume the
their activities again. One way to fix this is that rename the file
iexplore.exe into browser.exe or something else. Then run browser.exe to
surf the net. The file iexplore.exe usually locates in the folder C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer\. When you try to rename the iexplore.exe, the OS
usually make a new copy of iexplore.exe after the renaming. So don't worry
about that. Make sure that you update all IE shortcuts from C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe to C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\browser.exe. For the IE shortcut on your Desktop, it always links
to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe. So you need to manually
remove it or remove it from Display in Control panel. Then make a shortcut t
o C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\browser.exe, and then move this
shortcut to the desktop. At least, this fix is working on my computer.
The above method to stop pop up is working for Internet Explorer of
Windows XP operating system.
