Select Boxes with "floating" options?

Hi

I am searching for the following solution:
I would like to have a select box which has a specified width, but shows me
the dropdown window with a larger width (so that I can read the whole text
of an select box entry).
If thats not possible, an other approach could be to display a tooltip while
mousemove over the select box entries. I tried this already, without
success.

Any tips how to do that?
