I looked over the Google toolbar and found the reason immediately. I have been
using the toolbar for searches and ignoring the other features. The toolbar
has a button for "options". If you click it you get a tab where you can
select
"Autofill Button". A second tab gives more options, one of which is
"Automatically highlight fields that Autofill can fill". If that is not
checked
the non white backgrounds don't occur.
I fooled around with the HTML for my web page a bit and found that the
Google toolbar must check the text which accompanies the Text Box. If it
finds a match to one of the autofill variables it puts in the colored
background. The reason that some of my text boxes were colored and others
were white is that Google didn't recognize some of the accompanying text -
e.g. It didn't recognize "Recipient's Name", so left it white. As a test I
changed the HTML from "Recipients Name" to just "Name". Google recognized
that and colored the background.
Problem solved. thanks a lot for your interest.
