I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this problem. Whenever
I
connect to the Dell Support website,
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen
to download drivers, I enter their little script program that asks for my
machine type and then it hangs when I click Confirm.
It isn't a script,...I think it is a Java Applet,...which means it depends
on the Java JRE on the workstation. If you web access requires
authentication then the JRE is probably failing.
1. Open the Java Tool in Windows Control Panel
2. Go to the Networking section and tell it to operate "direct" (no proxy
server)
3. Make sure the Firewall Client is installed on the workstation
4. The Firewall Client will overcome the flawed design of the JRE and
provide the means of authentication.
5. Try again.
The same technique is used to correct similar issues with Windows Media
Player, and the Update utilities in some of the anti-virus and anti-spyware
tools such as Symantec and Spybot S&D.
It is a simple concept,...instead of letting the third party app "fumble"
around trying to authenticate with the web proxy service,....you make the
App proxy "agnostic" and let the Firewall Client do the work.
