Re: ISO-8859-1 compression method

Hi Jim,

please have a look to the guy's around the world having trouble with this
new "feature".

Sorry David, they're not even remotely similar, although I understand the
comparison you're making.
If you feel this behavior is a bug, please contact PSS and work through
the
process there.

Hi Jim,

I agree with you in a high security environment. Do you remember
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821724 on ISA 2000?
For me it's similar. Some users may like this functionality and the
other's
not. As result we got a fix/workaround, even though ther
was an RFC 2617.

IE is not relevant to the question.
If the remote server sends compressed content when ISA did not request
it,
this violates RFC-defined behavior.

Yes of course, but ISA may able to handle this. What's happen without
the
ISA between this kind of server and the IE?
If the IE is decompressing the page, then I think you should decide the
ISA
adminstrator the behavior.

Your original posting asked about the "compression received but not
requested, so ISA discarded it" error.
The link you provided is for a fix that is included in SP3, but does
not
address the "compressed response discarded" event.
The "compressed response discarded" is by design. Web servers should
not
send compressed content where it has not been requested.

That's a completely different issue.
The errors you reported are something else altogether.

Thanks Jim,

I have seen that SP3 will focus exact this

this is an expected event; if the client (ISA in this case)
sends
a
request
and does not specify that it supports compression, the server
should
not
send it compressed.
Prior to SP2, ISA was unaware of compression other than to
complain
about
it
if it was told to enforce HTTP filtering.

Hi Jim,

I have a question regarding the compression since SP2, we have
disabled
this
and noticed multiple events since this update like
the following:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Microsoft ISA Server Web Proxy
Event Category: None
Event ID: 23004
Date: 20.08.2007
Time: 10:16:48
User: N/A
Computer: COMPUTER
Description:
ISA Server was unable to process a response body from
http://forecastfox.accuweather.com. The server supplied a
compressed
response although ISA Server did not request compression. The
response
was
discarded.

What was happened with this condition prior SP2?
May it possible to configure a other reaction to this?

Best regards
Daniel

You can disable compression on a per-destination basis.
The SP2 updated docs break this down for you.

We ahve researchers on staff from Mexico and Venezuela who
occasionally
get
rejected responses when accessing websites they visit because
ISA
does
not
support this compression method. One example website is
http://smartad.mercadolibre.com.mx) . Is there any work-around
for
this?
