Re: Stopping Tape Backups through ISA 2004

That's kind of my point - why is the traffic going through ISA?

The scenario is this - I have 6 or 7 servers located behind ISA all on the
same address set/subnet. One of those machines is the backup machine. It's
backing up those other servers so it shouldn't be going through ISA.

My thinking was that this was caused by the backup machine using the ISA IP
as the default gateway (as I mentioned previously).

To that end, I removed the ISA IP as the default gateway and just installed
the firewall client (in the hopes that this is the reason that machine shows
up so heavily in the reports).

When I look at the monthly report on the ISA machine it shows that 278.64
gigs went through it from the tape backup machine. (Bytes In 276.72 gigs and
Bytes Out at 1.92 gigs).

I don't know whether that's indicative of the ISA server itself being backed
up or whether it's the entire LAN.

What I do know is that I had to make rules on the ISA server allowing the
ports the backup clients use in order for tape backups to work. This would
indicate to me that every machine is going through the ISA Server during a
backup.

Mt thoughts were that because each of the servers uses ISA as it's default
gateway that this would be the case?

Best & Thanks!
Dave

Why would backup traffic be going through the ISA? That makes no sense
unless the machine is backing of contents of machines on the opposite side
of the ISA.

You can't bypass ISA if it is physically between the Source and the Target
unless you have an alternate path to get there through a different device.

Hi Folks;

Just a quick question - I have a server that soley performs tape backups
of
the network. Up until now it's been a secureNAT machine (used ISA IP for
default gateway).

When I run a monthly report needless to say it shows a ton of traffic
from
that machine. Is there anyway to stop it from going through the ISA
server
during backups so that the reports don't show the tape backup traffic?

Thanks!
Dave
