Re: firewall between game servers and clients

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

A good "user beating" out behind the building in the alley works wonders
with that. Firewalls and Proxy Servers are not babysitters. You'll have to
deal with these types of matters in a more direct way.

haha agreed... i just wish we could do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70mv9O0ILQM

Network tools like NetMonitor (MS) or Etherreal (or whatever it is called
now) running on the Servers themselves can help locate where trouble is
comming from. Perhaps some host-based Firewall software running directly on
the servers themselves may help (Black Ice, Zone Alarm, etc)

i am running comodo firewall on all the servers now and have no issues
since, but implementing a firewall between the clients and the
backbone would have been cool
do you know if the software based firewall on the servers hinder the
performance... just curious

No. Firewalls sit *between* networks not "on" Networks. They monitor
traffic moving between two networks,...they do not monitor traffic within a
single network. There are such things as single-nic Web Caching Proxys, but
they do not apply to this kind of thing.

well one thing is for sure i will make sure i have an ISA server setup
between the internet and the backbone network.... just to filter
internet traffic like i do here at home and to block sites know
useless (gaming event) protocols ect... everything i already have
setup already
and unless i can find a firewall to sit between the backbone and the
clients i will just run firewalls on each machine

another thing i am looking into is setting up a snort box to attempt
to block malicious traffic internally, do you have any experience with
one of these?
