ok thanks for the excellent info... i guess what i am looking for is
ways to block 2 things, useless traffic and malicious traffic... we
have had issues before with users running ping attacks, arp spoofing
poison attacks and so on....
A good "user beating" out behind the building in the alley works wonders
with that. Firewalls and Proxy Servers are not babysitters. You'll have to
deal with these types of matters in a more direct way.
Network tools like NetMonitor (MS) or Etherreal (or whatever it is called
now) running on the Servers themselves can help locate where trouble is
comming from. Perhaps some host-based Firewall software running directly on
the servers themselves may help (Black Ice, Zone Alarm, etc)
so what i need is some sort of monitoring
firewall that can monitor traffic and check for malicious activity...
all on the lan
No. Firewalls sit *between* networks not "on" Networks. They monitor
traffic moving between two networks,...they do not monitor traffic within a
single network. There are such things as single-nic Web Caching Proxys, but
they do not apply to this kind of thing.
