I guess this comes down to a marketing discussion that is probably outside
the scope of a technical newsgroup.
Exactly my point... along the lines of my original response, if you re-read
that (re: the way MS markets their products).
I think there is a very large percentage of the
market (I would guess 15 to 35% of the total installed base of Windows)
that
would buy a lot of Windows servers to replace their aging Windows 2000
servers if the price were about 1/2 of what a standard edition product
costs.
I am not up to date on licensing, but is there not a Windows 2003 Upgrade
license, which should allow you to upgrade from Windows 2000, for less?
Maybe not 50%, I think in the past the cost of the upgrades hovered
somewhere around 60% of the 'retail' cost. So that would be your upgrade
path right there, with a (very) small price differential vs. Web Edition.
