Firewalls/Proxys are not the right approach and developers seem to know that
and don't waste their time writing that stuff for those situations. Spyway
is neither "viruses" nor "spam" so you can't use the same techiques for
them. They are a unique threat, although somewhat similar to Viruses.
The best you get with at Firewall/Proxy is to have a massive list of
blacklisted URLs to block sites. That still won't effect the installation of
the Spyware in the first place if it was "bundled" with other software,...it
will only prevent it from "phoning home". So that lessens the effect but
doen't solve the problem.
The currently existing anti-spyware products have the right idea, they just
need to mature to the point that the AV products have.
The individual Client is still the best place to combat this the same way
that the Client is still the best place to combat Viruses.
