Using "http//server/folder" for directory browsing via VPN

In XP, using VPN, I was able to browse folders on a server when using IE and apps (like Subversion/SSVN), using syntax like:

http://server/folder

which resolved not to a web address, but to our server, where it would ask for login in credentials

I am unable to get this syntax to work under the default settings of Vista Ultimate RTM.

Are there any special configuration changes on Vista that need to be done to enable this kind of access?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
