Inter and Intranet access via VPN

I am having the classic problem where if I leave "use default gateway on remote network" checked, I can not access the internet.
Unchecking this option makes the internet work fine.
But I wish to access certain websites hosted on our servers via the VPN instead of over the internet (if that makes sense).
The sites work fine, but I had just hoped for the extra security of the VPN, even though I'm using SSL already.
If I manually enter the VPN DNS server (10.0.0.17) I can get the access I wanted, but then I have to manually remove the DNS server when I am done and I had hoped there was a one-time setting.

If I just have to live with accessing the sites over the internet instead of the VPN, I can, but if there is a way to have my cake and eat it to, please let me know.
