Re: Unable to download Microsoft updates

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Phillip,

You are a wealth of knowledge!!! I appreciate you getting back to me. I
need to do some reading about setting up this queue filter (I've never done
it before). This is strange because this was working at one time. I can't
remember when the last time it was working but it was working. The only
thing that has changed is we had an old ISA server on our domain that I never
shut off the Web Proxy service. When I turned off the service, I had to
reconfigure some of the clients because they kept looking for the ISA 2000
Web Proxy service instead of the new ISA 2004. But it might not have been
working just prior to this as well. I'll try to set this filter up and if I
get the results you mentioned, I'll either contact you or Microsoft for the
repair tool. Thanks for the information!

The Windows Updates components are screwed up on the client. This is not an
ISA thing.

But first, use the Live Monitoring Log to verify nothing is being denied at
the ISA. Set the query filter to only show traffic from the one "test
client",...then attempt the Windows Update site.

Once proven that the problem is not ISA,...there is a repair tool for
Windows Update that can be run on the client. It is not publicly
available,..I had to call MS Support to get it. I can send you a copy of
mine if you contact me,..but it is a "use at your own risk" thing and I
don't want to post it to the whole world.

We are using ISA 2004. We are unable to receive any Microsoft updates
when
we go to the updates web site. We even have an access that rule that is
extremely open and still nothing. The access rule is set up as follows:

Action = Allow
Protocol = All outbound traffic
From = internal
To = External
Users = All Users
Content Type = All Content Types

With this rule in place, I don't know why it would not allow updates to
download. This was working up to two weeks ago. Although this 2004
server
has been online since September, we also had another ISA 2000 server that
still had it's Web Proxy service turned on until earlier this week. When
we
turned the Web Proxy service off, a bunch of strange things started to
occur.
Working with Microsoft, we found out that a lot of client computers were
still going thru the ISA 2000 web Proxy for Proxy information. We are
slowly
getting things back to normal but are still unable to get content from the
updates web site. We are able to get to the the updates web site. We get
ot
the "Welcome to Microsoft Updates" page. When I click on Express or
typical,
it goes thru it's motions but then we get an error page which states, "The
website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying
to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem".
None
of the options helped!! If anyone has ideas on how to approach this, I 'd
really like to hear from you!!

TIA,

Jim
