Re: 502 Proxy error msg when trying to download CPIO.Z file

Hi Jim;

I'm by no means an expert in ISA 2004 but I do run it and have run into
similar issues. It sounds like when the vendor moved the file to a new
server they changed the compression type that the web server uses.

In my case, ISA 2004 always has a problem with one particular site that I
visit. In fact, I get the same error message. It's caused by the compression
type that the server uses that I am connecting to. ISA doesn't like it.

So, I suspect this is what your problem is. When you mentioned that you can
access the file from an XP machine - I suspect that machine is not located
behind the ISA server? If so, and that would make sense, then you know that
the problem is not on the vendors side.

As to your question about where these settings lie - In ISA 2004 go to
Configuration => General => Define HTTP Compression Preferences.

If I am correct that your issue is the same as I encountered (and it's not
uncommon) these are the settings that hold the key. If HTTP compression is
enabled on the first tab of the HTTP Compression Preferences (the Settings
tab) then I would check my theory by removing all compression and then
re-trying the download.

If I'm correct (and I suspect I am) then you should be able to access the
download properly. If you can, then we have confirmed that the actual
problem is the compression type used on the vendor's new server and also,
ISA's limited support for certain compression types (I think it only
supports gzip?).

Anyway, in my case I've enabled as much compression as I can. For me this
means;

(Element) External (Reply With) Enabled (Request For) Disabled
(Element) Internal (Reply With) Disabled (Request For) Enabled

In my case, I can still access that goofy server with these settings and
still have some compression used.

Hope this helps!
Dave

We have an ISA 2004 STD server running on Windows 2003 server. Every
night,
we have a UNIX server going out to the Internet to download a content file
from one of our vendors. The vendor recently changed servers and IP
addresses. Since then, we are unable to download content from the vendor
from the UNIX server. Up to the change, we had no problem. The vendor
says
the problem is on our end. When I look at alerts on the ISA server, when
ever this content report is run, we get the following alert msg:

ISA Server was unable to decompress a response body from http://vendor's
web
site because the response was compressed by the x-compress method, which
is
not supported by ISA Server. This happens when a Web Server is configured
to
supply responses compressed by the x-compress method regardless of the
type
of compression requested.

If you want ISA Server to block such responses, configure the policy
rule's
HTTP policy to block the Content-Encoding header in responses. Otherwise,
such responses will be forwarded without decomnpression to the client and
can
be cached.

The file is in a CPIO.Z format. My question is, where in the HTTP policy
do
I set this up? If not in the HTTP policy, then where? Also, I know with
ISA
2000, we were able to clear the cache by deselecting a tab and then
re-enabling it (sorry but I can't remember exactly where this was set).
Is
there a way of clearing hte cache in ISA 2004 server and how would I do
this?
