I'm in a bit of a quandry. I'm trying to configure my ISA server to
allow audio communications through a program called Roger Wilco.
1. You don't "open ports" on ISA. That is not the way it works. That is not
the right concept.
2. There is very little chance this will ever work or ever work fully. If
you want to mess with MS Flight Simulator with these add-ons, you should not
do it from behind ISA. ISa is built/designed to be a commercial grade
firewall product,..not a home-user firewall or a game playing firewall.
3. I'll try to breakdown a few things here, but I have real doubts there is
any hope. I have used Roger Wilco, Wazzup, combined with MSFS in the
past,...but not from behind any firewall product, it ran from a machine with
a public (static) IP# sitting behind nothing more than a DSL modem
With ISA.....
Outbound is separate from Inbound.
Outbound is done with Access Rules
Inbound is done with Publishing Rule
ISA is not simply a "NAT Box" like all the Firewall Appliances that are out
there.
"By default, Roger Wilco sends and receives audio as UDP packets on
port 3782, and supports UDP port translation on the inbound leg."
This would take two Rules. One Access Rule, one Server Publishing Rule.
"By default, Roger Wilco communicates with the GameSpy Master Servers
on port 27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat) and port 28900 (Master
Server List Request). "
This would take one Access Rule. 28900 what? TCP? UDP? In? Out?
I am going to guess and say TCP...and consider both outbound.
"Roger Wilco and RWBS use a TCP socket on port 3782 for administering
channel membership (for Create and Join operations).
This would take one Access Rule. Again i have to guess,...I will assume
outbound.
This it typical of Support for many products when the programmers who wrote
it don't really understand networking and firewalls and proxys as well as
they should. If you are lucky you get half the information you need, less
that half if you aren't so lucky. They also aren't identifying the GameSpy
Server for you,...meaning you have to allow this stuff to the whole Internet
because you have no way to limit it to the GameSpy Servers, which is
horrible.
Below is my rough suggestion made from guesses and speculation. It probably
won't work, but here it is. If anything, it will help you understand the
direction to go in and the correct concepts of how you should think about
it.
-------------------------------
1. Create the protocols
(Name) - (specs)
RW Audio UDP In - UDP 3782 Receive/Send
RW Audio UDP Out - UDP 3782 Send/Receive
RW GameSpy Heartbeat - UDP 27900 Send (maybe Send/Receive)
RW GameSpy List Request - TCP 28900 Outbound
RW/RWBS Channel Admin - TCP 3782 Outbound
--------------------------------
2. Create the Access Rules
Name: RW Audio Outbound
From: Internal
To: External
Protocol: RW Audio UDP Out
Users: "Whatever", or use All Users for Anonymous
Name: RW GameSpy
From: Internal
To: External
Protocol: RW GameSpy Heartbeat, RW GameSpy List Request
Users: "Whatever", or use All Users for Anonymous
Name: RW Channel Maintainence
From: Internal
To: External
Protocol: RW/RWBS Channel Admin
Users: "Whatever", or use All Users for Anonymous
-------------------------------------
3. Create the Server Publishing Rule
Name: Publishing, RW Audio Inbound
From: External
To: <IP# of PC running RW>
Protocol: RW Audio UDP In
--------------------------------------------------
It probably won't work, but that is the best I can do with it using the
information at hand.

Hey Phillip,
First, many thanks for the detailed reply. To be honest, I wasn't
expecting much of a reply from anyone. Also, thanks for correcting my
terminology. Like I said, I'm no network guru.
Your assumptions on the 28900 port are correct. I have it configured
as TCP outbound. To be honest, I haven't set anything up with the
27900 UDP port. I will try that, but with all the server listing,
text and graphic functions working great, and the comments on the web
site of UDP 3782 handling all the audio, I just discounted the need
for that. I'm probably wrong.
Since I have no troubles connecting/joining, I assume the TCP 3782
Outbound is appropriately configured.
As for the 3782 ports, I have establish the udp send/receive, receive/
send and tcp outbound.
The server publishing rule is something I have not tried, nor even
came to mind. I didn't see the need (probably because I don't fully
understand). I have a server publishing rule for my web server and
never really thought that concept would apply to an audio
application. I will try that, too.
As for physical configuration, it's cable modem to cable router to ISA
server external interface. The cable router network ports serve as my
"DMZ". This doesn't seem to be an issue. Everything works when
plugged into my DMZ.
Again, thanks a lot. I'll try these suggestions as soon as I get the
chance (probably Thursday evening).
