Einigen scheint der Unterschied, zwischen Open-Source und Freeware
noch immer nicht ganz geläufig zu sein. Open-Source bedeutet erstmal
nichts anderes, als dass die Quellen für jeden zur Verfügung stehen.
Unabhängig davon, kann sich aber sehr wohl jemand mit kommerziellen
Interesen dahinter stellen und die Entwicklung dieses Sources
voranttreiben, das Produkt vertreiben und auch Support für dieses
Produkt leisten. Das eine, schließt das andere nicht aus.

Klassisches Beispiel ist StarOffice, das von Sun inkl. Dokumentation
und Support gegen Bares vertrieben wird, dessen Basis OpenOffice ist.
OpenOffice kann von jedem frei genutzt werden, allerdings ohne
Hersteller Support. Bei den zig Linux Distributionen ist das
letztendlich auch nichts anderes. Du erwirbst damit in erster Linie
lediglich einen Support-Vertrag und bekommst als Bonus noch den
Service eines Rundum-Sorglos-Komplettpakets auf CD/DVD.
