Das ist eine ganz einfache Rechnung: Die Kommunikation über HTTPS ist
vertraulich durch Verschlüsselung. Verschlüsselung kostet mehr Rechenzeit
als keine Verschlüsselung. Mehr benötigte Rechenleistung bedeuten mehr und
schnellere Web-Server, die natürlich Geld kosten. Wenigstens ist das Login
bei eBay mittlerweile per default auf SSL, früher musste man extra jedes
Mal den Login über auf SSL aktivieren.

Wenn der Web-Server genügend Prozessorleistung für die Verschlüsselung hat,
sollte Übertragungsgeschwindigkeit identisch sein.
