Hello RobertVA - no joy, I'm afraid. The Nvidia control panel let me do
thsoe things (NVIDIA GEFRCE FX 5200LE) but without success. I'm still
getting only the left half of the image, stretched out across my whole screen.
I've also noticed that when I now close out that game, and indeed any other,
and retturn to the desktop, all the icons thereon revert to the "unknown
filetype" icon for a few seconds before resetting as the normal programem
icons. I guess that this is linked - I always believe that two odd things
at once are really the same thing happening in differenmt ways ?

Hello all - I'm using a P4 machine with XP home, about 2 years old.
Suddenly, my son's PC games are displaying incorrectly. Activision's "Rome
Total War" (with all the patches) and THQ's "Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War -
Winter Assualt" especially, but he tells me others are as well. The issue
seems to be that now the image looks as if it would need a screen about 30"
wide to display in full. To the best of my knowledge neither he nor I have
adjusted anything. No other image displays are affected.
I've tried resetting "options" within the games to no avail. All I recall
doing recently is installing "talk it, type it" and "easy clean". The
former because I have an old wartime diary I want to transcribe and the
latetr because I was silly...I already have Advanced Uninstaller Pro 2005 and
its fine. I have since uninstalled both TITI and EC and utilised "system
restore" to go back to an earlier date but also to no avail.
I have also noticed that the system as a whole is running slowly. I have a
broadband 2Mb connection and recently installing a new Nvidia driver update -
thinking this may be the case of the display issues - and the 40Mb download
was telling me it was going to take over an hour !
I have run a full scan on Trend Micro PC-Cillin 14, that told me I was
clean; a Spybot SD1.4 check said no threats and Ad-Aware SE Personal says
I'm clean as well.
Any thoughts ?
All comments gratefully received - my son has to do his homework instead,
now !!

Some video cards have independent vertical refresh rates and screen size
settings for each resolution setting. Those settings might have been
corrupted somehow. Size and vertical refresh settings are normally
accessible through the advanced display settings available through the
control panel or right clicking the desktop. Specific details of the
procedure vary, as that code is produced by your video card (or
motherboard) manufacturer OR the manufacturer of the Graphics Processor
chip it uses.
Check the software that came with you computer to see if it includes a
utility to monitor you CPU temperature and clock speed. Many
manufacturers also allow consumers to download such software from their
web sites. There's SOME chance your motherboard is throttling down you
CPU to keep its temperature in control. Notebook/laptop computers often
have CPU speed throttle functions associated with battery power
consumption too.
