freelancer problems

came back to the game after a few months of not playing
it n tried to get on to some of the old servers i used to
go on and every time i try it wont connect to the global
server it jus sits there saying connecting... n nothing
else. im trying to connect via the internet, im not sure
how to 'ping the machine' im trying to connect to. some
one i know suggested i turn off my firewall, turn down my
security and disable any ip blocking programs (wich i
dont have) i did so and the problem still proceeds. if u
need more info ask n i will add it if possible.
