Mafia Sound Problem

Hi,

I've installed Mafia on my PC and am experiencing sound
problems.
The game installs ok, but the sound of the cars has
echoes and the voices within game play are squeaky.

All avi movies play correctly including sound.

I've had the game installed before and everything worked
just fine. Now I've reinstalled it some months later and
the sound doesn't work correctly.

I see that Mafia requires directX 8.1, I currently have
version 9.0b installed. Could this be the issue?

I have audio and video codecs installed under and sound
in device manager.
I also have wintv installed, which probably wasn't
installed at the time the of the first Mafia installation.

I have tried to reinstall Mafia on a number of occassion,
but the sound problem remains.

Any help would be appreciated.
