Flight Simultor 98 Joystick problems

I installled a saitek Rumble Force Joystick to control
Flight Simulator 98. It loaded perfectly and 'rumbled'
but as soon as I touch the keyboard as instructed by the
game to release the brake, control reverts to 'keyboard'
and the Joystick no longer works?

I've tried the drop down menu, 'Options' etc and resetting
the control to Joystick but still nothing happens? can
you help please?

I have Windows 98.
