Jon,
Microsoft Support Q-Article 829478 (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829478)
details "Known Video-Related Issues with Halo: Combat Evolved".
In part it states:
Supported Video Cards
Halo requires a minimum of 32 megabytes (MB) of video memory and a chipset
that supports Hardware Transform and Lighting. When a card is classified as
supported it means that Halo will work with that card and that you may
contact Microsoft Product Support to resolve any Halo issues that you are
having with that card.
The following cards were known to work with Halo and were therefore
classified as supported at the time that Halo was shipped:

These chipsets (including your GeForce 4 Go 440) were all tested in some
form with Halo before the game shipped. Unfortunately, we cannot test every
version of every driver for every chipset on this list. And we cannot
control the frequency with which Toshiba releases drivers for their system.
Your best option would be to contact Toshiba and see if they have any newer
drivers for other system models that might work with your system. I checked
their site and they have newer drivers for the Satellite 1955-S807,
1955-S806, 1955-S805 models that may work with your system, but you should
contact Toshiba first to get more information.
Other than that, you have the option of returning Halo. Microsoft North
