disabling firewalls and antifviruses

I have problems when I try to install directx 9.0b. I read
in one post earlier that disabling firewalls and
antiviruses will help to not currupt the installation
process. I would appreciate if somebody could tell me how
to disable firewalls and antiviruses or further help me in
installing directx 9.0b run-time for Halo on PC. I am sure
that my comp specs qualify the standards. Thanks for your
help.
