If the router is listed as one of the supported ones you can try port magic
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1046374969

you did not state what brand of router so it's nearly impossible to tell you of any known issues with that venders products. Some
generic advice

Port forwarding and DMZ are not supported on the same router for most brands. if you attempt to use both then one or the other
(often both) will not function correctly. If you attempted DMZ first then forwarding disable it and reset the router itself to
clear it's settings and force them to be reloaded. Some routers (especially linksys) require this to be done several times in
succession to completely clear the units memory and reload the settings from the saved copy on your base station.

When forwarding the target address should be the first IP assigned by the router not the public IP or the router IP). that way the
address is valid no mater which system boots first or how many are currently collected.

If using DSL you should try connecting to the modem directly and try connecting to a game. Many DSL modems use the same proxy
software that your router does (NAT) and the modem itself may require the same sort of configuration that you used for the router.
