If this is a non-FF or force feedback version 1 stick connected through a game port you may need to reinstall the game port with it
connected to get the system to see the stick.

Open control panel
Open system
Open the hardware tab
click device manager
expand the listing for sound, video and game controllers
select the game port(s) listed and click remove
***if no game port is listed for the sound card you will have to remove the sound card itself to force a reinstallation**

Restart the system WITH THE JOYSTICK CONNECTED and windows will find two 'new" devices, the game port then the joystick and install
the drivers for both.

After the drivers are installed open control panel and then open game controllers .. click add and select "microsoft sidewinder
(autodetect)" option.

If the stick is a force feedback model 2 you will need to install the software that came with the device from the CD before you can
get it to work. This is because of an anti-piracy feature, the stick and software are paired and one is useless without the other.
