Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Hi Distressed,

If this is a new error, try restoring your system back to when it worked.

1. How to use Windows XP System Restore:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gethelp/systemrestore.asp

2. If you've been unable to see the exact error due to a system restart then
To stop this behavior go to Control Panel / System / Advanced /
Click the Startup and Recovery Settings button / Uncheck the box
labelled "Automatically restart" under the System Failure section.

3. To analyse the error, try the steps in: http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

4. If the error indicates a file name that begins with ati, or nv (nVidia)
the most likely solution would be to install the latest drivers using
the instructions at: http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html#drivers

5. Otherwise, here's how to troubleshoot IRQL errors (scroll down this page):
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gettingstarted/guide/troubleshoot.asp

6. And here are the Microsoft Articles on those IRQL errors (complete list):
http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?InCC_hdn=true&Catalog=LCID%3D1033%26CDID%3DEN-US-KB%26PRODLISTSRC%3DON&withinResults=&QuerySource=gASr_Query&Product=winxp&Queryc=IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL&Query=IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL&KeywordType=ALL&maxResults=25&Titles=false&numDays=&InCC=on

7. Hope this shines some light on the situation. If it seems like a lot of diagnosis,
and I agree that it is, try a repair installation of Windows instead, test your RAM
and update your drivers (step 4) to optimize your Windows XP installation. :-)

Afterwards, boot up your system, turn on your XP Internet Firewall,

| Well, today I was doing my usual web browsing and was playing Halo: Combat
| Evolved on my PC. I have a self-built system, MSI K8MM-V with a Sempron 3000+
| and 40 gig and 80 gig hard drives, with a 64 MB Geforce2 MX400 AGP GPU and a
| Gateway EV700 monitor at 1024x768 resolution.
|
| So, I was playing, like I said, and all of a sudden the game minimized and I
| got a Windows Stop Error: IRQL_Greater_or_Equal. I shut off my computer
| quickly, so that's all I really saw. After a couple of failed restarts, and
| more stop errors, I ended up with a POST error and my monitor not picking up
| my computer's signal at all. I have successfuly ruled out both the video card
| and the monitor as the problem... all that's left are the expensive things,
| so I'm worried.
|
| If I'm in the wrong section of this discussion board thing, please direct me
| to the correct section. If not, someone please help me... I rely on my
| computer heavily, sometimes using it for eight hours a day.. I'm in a fix
| here.
|
| Thanks,
