Menu in a narrow frame

I would like to have my menusystem in a narrow frame in the left part of the
window. All links adressed to the larger right part of the window.
Submenus grow to the right. My problem is then that they extend underneath
the right frame so I cant see them.
How do I get my menuframe on top of the hole window, so I can see the
submenus as they grow?
