Unfortunately, I don't think you'll find a solution to make a background
image *not* fill whatever it's the background for.
One thing that's slowing the page down is the server connection. Images
load in the order they are called in the html in the page. Slower aka
"free' servers limit the number of simultaneous port connections that can be
used by a "visitor" to a normal maximum of two ports. Which means only two
items on the page can be *served* to a visitor at a time. So if there are 8
items / components to the page, it loads 1 and 2, then 3 and 4, then 5 and 6
...... until all items on the page are loaded.
You can get a really reasonable hosting company for $50 per ***year*** so
you might want to check into some.
believe me if you use one the page will open much faster.
My hobby site www.95isalive.com is hosted on a $50 per year server ( plus
$10 for domain registration )
and it works just fine. I've seen my server open as many as 17 simultaneous
ports when serving a page.
The host I use for it: www.123ehost.com and yes they have FrontPage
extensions.
There are many others in the same price range.

The Forum does give fair warning about posting e-mail addresses, and I did take a chance, I just haven't known the means whereby e-mail addresses are "harvested" by losers with nothing better to do than try and infect as many computers as possible. > > It isn't the page background image -sky.jpg- at http://wvis.ws that I was focused on, but eggs.gif, 6.9Kb, the table background pic, and my hope that if I could restrict it to only filling the table border (cell space: 2, border size: 1) instead of filling the entire table by default, the page might load faster. I hadn't suspected sky.jpg as the culprit because eggs.gif APPEARED to take the most time to load, for whatever reason, on the Home page and the Satellites page (eggs.jpg, 23.5Kb) Both the .gif and .jpg are tiled, the idea being to match the repeating pattern of anarule.gif, the dividing line, part of the FP Nature theme. > > As for loading time, I don't mind a brief glance at the Easter eggs (cable modem, 256K) but 56K is wretched, and yes, the files are on AOL's FTP server which SHOULD only allow 2MB/user. Right now I'm near 4MB, but an AOL techie assured me that I wouldn't be shut down as long as I didn't go commercial. It's an educational site. We're looking at Terradon to host. At least then we can get rid of the obnoxious Register.com ad. > > I'll continue hoping that a newer FrontPage will be friendlier to what I'm trying to do with table borders.
