Re: how do i set up frontpage extensions in apache 2.2 for windows

Mark:
This link: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3198 contains the
Product Support lifecycle information for Windows Server 2003.

It says: Mainstream support will end two years after the next version of
this product is released. Extended support will end five years after
mainstream support ends.

I have been told by my contact at Microsoft that the FPSEs for Windows 2003
Server are under the same support lifecycle as Windows 2003 Server itself.

Something to keep in mind, MS didn't create FrontPage originally, they
bought it from another company that offered extensions for Apache on Unix
and MS brought it over to IIS on Windows themselves (if I remember
correctly). There was never a version of the binaries for the Windows
version of Apache and, actually, MS contracted another company to keep the
Unix Apache versions current. That being said, only certain versions of
Apache were supported anyways, and these were generally older ones as new
versions of the extensions have not been released in half a decade. MS has
also discontinued the FP Server Extensions not only on Unix, but on
Windows as well with one exception, they've contraced a company to develop
a version of the extensions for IIS7 since they were so widely used for
publishing.

So, short story, the extensions aren't going to be officially supported
really no matter what the platform except with the possibility of a
special version being made for IIS 7 as IIS 7 needs a new set since it's
been completely redesigned.

I was afraid of this, as this was where the info I was finding seemed to
lead. To find that it is no longer supported on Unix (Linux), is a drag.
Why does MS make such expensive stuff that is not supported or support
stops
for the world's most popular server software (Apache)?

Oh, Well,
Ted

Hi. I am running Apache 2.2 for windows on a winXP pro sp2 machine.
I do
know a good bit of HTML, but have been looking at creating my web
pages
with
FrontPage 2003, as it's easier to use than writing all that stinking
code
in
pure HTML, albeit, to make it the way I want it to look takes a bit of
'hybriding'. Is that a word? Anyway, now, I have found some of the
stuff
that FrontPage can do is beyond my novice HTML and non-existent CGI
knowledge.

Mainly, when testing some of the form filling and hit counter stuff
that
FrontPage makes look so easy, I find that my Apache has to have
FrontPage
extensions enabled.

So, please, I hope that this has been descriptive enough to show that
I am
not an idiot, I'm just looking for the easy way to enable the
extensions
within my apache without having to learn a whole bunch of more code.
On a
side note, from what I've found so far, it almost may be easier to go
ahead
and instal Linux and go from there.

Thanks in advance,

Ted
