Re: can't publish, author permissions issue

thomas... thanks for sticking with me and trying to get this issue resolved.

another computer-- start from scratch if you will.

you may just find the same question pop up again one of these days soon...

If you are still having these issues, make sure your host is accessing the site from within FP, but
from outside of their network.

been away a few days... thanks for getting back, thomas. i mean the
remote/host server site can't be opened-- just as a read only. if i attempt
to edit pages it requests user and pw but then won't accept my login. and i
know my login works because the techs at the hosting site are able to gain
access.

btw... far as i know i only have the web files and accompanying pages left
over from the windows 98 machine that were transferred over to the new
machine. but perhaps there's a criss-cross somewhere, i dunno. bottom
line-- i can't publish to web from my computer because i'm told i don't have
author permission... and i can't open the remote because it says i don't have
permission to edit pages from there. and i can't change permissions on fp
because i'm not being given the "security" fuction under the "tools" menu.
seems every where i'm sent a roadblock gets thrown up. frustrating.

Frank,

Which site, the copy from the Windows 98 PC or the live/remote site?

i can open the site but as a read only... when i attempted to open the remote
location with user name and pw i received the following: "you do not have
permission to make changes to this document. Do you want to open a read only
copy? For details see F:\DOCUME...blah blah blah...wecerr.txt"

opening wecerr.txt gave me the message "you are not authorized to perform
the current operation".

bottom line-- i can open and read but cannot publish back to my computer.
thanks for sticking with this, thomas.

You need to delete your local copy that you mad by copy the files from your old Windows 98
machine,
then open the live/remote site directly in FP, then publish a copy back to your new local
machine,
make any changes, then re=publish back to the live/remote server.

thomas...

thanks for your response. in answer to your question... what happened was
the old computer was failing and i didn't want to lose the fp files so i
copied them to disk and stuck them into a frontpage folder on the newer
machine-- that folder, i believe, was part of ms office but was empty because
fp had not been installed. reason was, i did not have the fp install disk
and so had to wait until another disk was purchased before i could install on
the new machine. when i finally ran fp and went to publish, i got the
results already described.

the old os system i was using with fp was windows 98. the new computer
(really an older new computer) uses windows 2000.

i researched on the ms support site and found a suggested solution for the
"author permission" issue which involved going through the fp security
function but, as i say, the "security" command under fp "tools", for some
reason, is disabled so i never did get as far as "permissions". among the
few support suggestions to get the security command functioning was tinkering
with the microsoft management console and converting the file system from FAT
to NTFS-- all of which made me a little nervous as it deals with the system
and was confusing.

bottom line is, i can't tap into the internet to publish my web files. as
i mentioned, the host site tech support people have no problem using my name
and password to gain access on their end, but i just get the message "this
operation requires author permission for ******.com:80

that's as detailed as i can get-- hope you didn't doze off. thanks again.

1. How did you move the FP files from the old machine to the new machine and what was the
old
OS?

2. The Permissions will normally be grayed out on your local machine as they can not be
published
between machines, They are available on your live/remote site if your web host allows you
to
have
this type of access.

3. The FP98 folder is part of the Windows OS and can not be deleted.

i've hit the wall and need some help. first off, i bought a new computer and
transferred my fp files over from the old. then i installed fp2000 with
disk. since then i can't publish. won't take my login, bouncing back
message "this operation requires author permission for *****.80" when i
attempted to check out permissions under tool>security-- the security command
was not available (dimmed). somethings going on and i can't figure it out.
problem is not with the host server, they can access the site with my pw no
prob... issue must be on my computer. guessing i screwed something up in
transferring files, etc. from old cpu. any suggestions most appreciated?
thanks. ps: there is a folder that i can't get delete from the old files,
reads version 3.0>bin>fp98sadm; fp98swin ... not sure if this is part of the
problem.
