Re: FP 2003 message: An error occurred accessing Windows Sharepoint Services site files.

Kat:

I have seen numerious issues with NIS in many of the MS newsgroups. The
recommendations I have seen are to uninstall NIS, and clean it out of the
registry, as it has a mind of its own.

I got the following instructions today from Symantec; unfortunately, they
don't work.
***********************
Kathleen, Norton AntiVirus(NAV) has the features of Norton Internet Worm
Protection as a firewall that protects your computer from incoming
Internet traffic. If you have a program that receives data from the
Internet, then by default, Internet Worm Protection blocks the incoming
traffic, unless you create a rule to allow the program. To resolve this
issue, I suggest you to create new rules for internet enable program
using the steps provided in the link below:

Title: 'Creating new program rules in Norton AntiVirus Internet Worm
Protection'
Document ID: 2004091413133506
Web URL:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/nav.nsf/docid/2004091413133506?Open&src=con_ols_nam

Note: In almost all reported cases, following the steps outlined in the
above-mentioned documents have successfully resolved the issue.

Therefore, I request that you to carry out all the steps mentioned in the
document. We thank you for your patience and co-operation in this regard.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance to you in using
the Symantec product.
***********************
So, I did let them know it didn't work and asked them to take a look at
the July 12th Security Update.

Yes, I'm running behind a Linksys VOIP router, but that doesn't seem to
be a problem for me.

Here's what I was able to find on the Symantec web site:

Networked computers cannot detect other computers on the network when
Norton AntiVirus is installed

http://symantec.atgnow.com/consumer/resultDisplay.do?gotoLink=1542&docType=1000&contextId=3395%3A1542.1591&clusterName=SymantecConsumer&contentId=93a290d4-2f56-4301-a8de-3f0410780540&responseId=1247c80604ccad04%3A1b1fbf4%3A10d542efbf5%3A-36eb&groupId=4&answerGroup=23&score=605&page=http%3A%2F%2Fservice1.symantec.com%2Fsupport%2Fnav.nsf%2Fpfdocs%2F2004111817072406

I followed the instructions to add my computer's IP address to the list
of permitted actions. Lo and behold, after a short testing period, no
connection errors in FrontPage!

What an amazing bunch of carp this is - I can't believe it. Of course,
I'm not 100% certain what adverse affect I've just implemented by
creating this rule, but that's something I'm going to follow-up with
Symantec.

Kathleen, again, my thanks for your diligence. I really appreciate your
help!

Hi Larry:
That is so great! One other question - are you running behind a router?
I had the same problem with Nortel Contivity VPN and my D-Link DI-524
router. It would make the connection, and then immediately lose it. I
also did NOT have the problem when I was on dial up, so I concluded that
the traffic coming back in, through the router, was being manipulated
somehow by the router into something that NAV was detecting as a worm.
Turning off the worm protection allowed me to connect with Nortel
Contivity VPN.

Please let us know what you find out from Microsoft and/or Symantec.

AMAZING!

Of course, I only turned it off for 15 minutes, but I did not
experience ANY errors. The moment I turned it back on, the problems
cropped up.

Now, not for nothing, there's got to be some kind of fine tuning that
can be done within the individual settings under Worm Protection so
that I can still protect my workstation and edit FrontPage webs.

Time to let my Microsoft contact know - and get on the phone with
Symantec technical support.

Thanks very much Kathleen!

I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP2 and FP 2003 with the most
recent set of Microsoft updates.

Recently I've started receiving the following message:

"An error occurred accessing your Windows Sharepoint Services site
files. Authors - if authoring against a Web server, please contact
the Webmaster for this server's Web site. WebMasters - please seee
the servers's application event log for more details."

Well, the web sites that I'm getting this error message are running
locally (http://machine_name/site_name) and this message pops up
when I try to open a site, or when I attempt to edit pages, or when
I attempt to publish changes to the remote site, or even if I try
to look at the Tools.. Site Settings.

Needless to say, most of the articles I've seen on Google refer to
a Windows Server issue - and that's not the case with this local
workstation.

To further confuse the issue, I don't know what "server's
application event log" this message is referring to.

Does anyone have any idea of a) what caused this to start happening
and b) some mechanism to correct it?

Thanks!
