Thomas,
Just wanted you to know that FINALLY....tech support emailed me this morning
with a big long apology for the inconvenience we have experienced over the
last two weeks. It was in fact a problem with the FP extensions. They had
been installed improperly or incompletely....something silly like that.
Also, I am well on my way creating subwebs and have them posted to the site
with updated links and borders. All systems are 'GO' now.
Thanks for the advice, tips and help from everyone!
Take care

Ok, the best way to create a subweb/site is to create a folder, then create a images folder
within,
then drag-n-drop all pages that you want in this subweb/site into the folder along with all
images,
into the images folder. Then right click on the main folder and select convert web / site. You
will
need to re-create any navigation, as a subweb/site is completely independent of the root web.

When i asked them about the OS and server that was the answer they gave....
Here is the link to the article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292625/
The following is the instruction that tech support gave me:
1. Save any pages you are currently working on and close them.
2. Click the File menu, point to New and click Web... from the menu that
appears.
3. Click (once) the type of web you want to create.
4. In the location of the new web: text box, enter the path to the current
web, followed by a \ (forward slash), and a name of a folder. (Without any
spaces or symbols)
5. Click the OK button.
6. Follow the Wizard (if there is one for the web you selected).
7. FrontPage will now open a second window of FrontPage that shows the
files in your subweb.
8. Close it for now.
9. Back at the original FrontPage window, scroll down your Folder List, and
you will see the new folder. It is named what you typed after the \ in Step
4.
10. When you want to edit the subweb, double-click the subweb.
11. When you publish your site, publish the site from your main web being
sure to check the option "Include subwebs" from the publishing window.
Important Note: Don't ever publish your site through your subweb web. You
will end up overwriting your current web that is on the web server.
Curious for your take on the issue.
Thanks Tom.

Can you provide a link to the article you read about creating subwebs, as there really only
two
ways to create then once a site is live.

OS is IIS and Server is Apache.
We have a DSL highspeed connection, not a problem there.
Spoke with tech support again about the 'web space' issue again and they
claim that their FP Extensions do not function well after 30MB and that the
website is unstable because of that.....think they should have given me some
sort of heads up about that 9 months ago considering we were almost at 30MB
then!!
Now it seems that creating the subwebs is the only answer.
Can you make some suggestions about subwebs and the best/easiest way to
create them? I am totally subweb stupid and have never used them before.
I found an article on them that says 'right click>convert to web', but that
method is not without it's problems.....
Thanks

Stephanie,

There is no stated limit on how large a web FP can handle. Subwebs / Subsites can be great
as
long
you understand limitation, however it may not solve the issue of locked files, as that is
host
server related, also you have a slow internet connection that could also cause problems.

Will have to do it on Monday Tom. I am leaving for the day and will be back
on Monday. All I can tell you without calling them is that we are hosted
through LocalNet, and I am not sure what they use for a server, if it is
in-house or not.
I put another request in this morning for them to reveiw ALL text of the
problems submitted.
Can you tell me....Is there a limit to how much Front Page can handle as far
as the size of a website? One of the answers that they have come back with is
that the website is too large for FP (35 MB) and that maybe I should create
subwebs. What is your thought(s) on that?
Thanks again for any help or suggestions.

Ask your web hosting service what OS and web server your site is hosted under.

What is IIS.
We have a webhosting service. Server is not housed here.

Are you using IIS? If so, the default location for websites is
C:\inetpub\wwwroot. Remember, this is on the web server if using IIS.
However, it may be on another drive.

When you find this folder, look for sub-folders such as _vti_pvt. These
"_vti...." are folders created when Front Page extensions are applied. Look
in these folder for the *.lck files.

Determine where FrontPage is installed at on the server. Try C:\program
files\microsoft front page\..... Look in these folders for *.lck files.

Wherever you find the *.lck files, delete them.

To be safe, make backup copies before you delete them, if you can.

"Stephanie" wrote:

ok.....followed your instruction....problem is it is searching and searching
and searching with no hits or end in site to the search (been at least 20
minutes now) ......just like me, the search can't even access any of the
folders!
So frustrating!

Ok, try this, step-by-step

1. find you lock file. Start > Search > *.lck. You'll have to enter
a path to your website. Make note of the locations of any *.lck files found.

2. For the files found which are in your website folder structure, delete
them if you can.

3. Restart the server if possible to ensure files are unlocked.

4. Try opening and saving to the websites again.

I was trying to save a page when the issue started.....I am sorry but the
rest of your message with suggestions is like reading greek to me. I have
little background/language/ or familiarity of this stuff other than an online
course to initially learn FP, then the rest is self taught over the last 5
years of having our website up and running......(self taught minus any of
these issues as they have NEVER happened before)
I just want to be able to go in and add, delete, edit the pages, as I always
have.
Unfortunately I have no support other than this discussion group....which I
have only had to access maybe 3 times in the last few years for help
(including now). We are just a small non-profit agency with no $$ for
technical support.
Any suggestions in terms that I can decipher as a 'non-technical' person?
Thanks Rich.

By chance, were you attempting to publish a page and somehow have that
interrupted? I assume you're opening a site on a remote server. Also, have
you tried deleting the various *.lck files? Try using FileMon to see if it
shows you what process has the *.lck files. Be sure to add filters so the
output does not overwhelm you. You may also find it very useful to save the
FileMon output, then import into Excel. Add relevant colum headers in Row 1
(Sequence, Time, Process, Request, Path, Other) then sort on Result or Path.
you can set filters. Right-click on any row to see the options.

"Stephanie" wrote:

yes...the host/server claims that there was a problem with the lock because
multiple users were trying to access the site.....which is IMPOSSIBLE as we
are an office of 3 and I am the only one who knows password or even how to
use FP....hmmmm
But they gave me no option to 'delete' the lock file.
The other issue is now that I have looked at the properties of the folder
that contains my pages (over 30 of them) and it tells me there are '0 files
/
0 folders' !
I am able to open my IE and hit 'edit with frontpage' to access
pages.....but it won't let me save them to the site.

Stephanie,

We have not yet been able to identify a root cause, but a reboot resolved
the issue.

For us, it seemed that that the problem extended to each website on the
particular server. It seemed to have been the Front Page lock files that
were the cause. Articles on the web mostly point to the lock file having
somehow gotten corrupted. Tow likely causes: 1) The publishing process
was
somehow interrupted, and 2) network connection was somehow lost. We have
not
been able to confirm either of these possibilities occurred.

Articles also seem to mostly say "delete the lock" files as resolution
but
we could not because the files were locked (by an unidentified process).
The
FP lock files in our case were in three locations, so we're not sure
which
was causing the problem.
1. C:\program files\Microsoft Front Page\version
3.0\servsupp\servers.cnf.
2. C:\program files\Microsoft Front Page\version 3.0\temp\frontpg.lck
3. \\servername\website-sharename\wwwroot\_vti_pvt\service.lck.

I personally did not try this, but you may have success using FileMon
from
SysInternals (<<http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html>>
very
useful utility if you're not familiar with it. You'll love it...). You
might also have some luck with Process Explorer (Good utility but I'm
much
less familiar with it.
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html )

HTH,
Rich

Seems we are having a similar issue.....I just posted my problem (which
also
included the error telling me consistantly that the extensions weren't
installed, but it was confirmed over and over by the techies that they
were)
now I can't open the site in FP at all......it just hangs with the
hourglass!
Hoping between your post and mine Kathleen or someone can help!
