Re: Can't open websites from Front Page

yes...the host/server claims that there was a problem with the lock because
multiple users were trying to access the site.....which is IMPOSSIBLE as we
are an office of 3 and I am the only one who knows password or even how to
use FP....hmmmm
But they gave me no option to 'delete' the lock file.
The other issue is now that I have looked at the properties of the folder
that contains my pages (over 30 of them) and it tells me there are '0 files /
0 folders' !
I am able to open my IE and hit 'edit with frontpage' to access
pages.....but it won't let me save them to the site.

Stephanie,

We have not yet been able to identify a root cause, but a reboot resolved
the issue.

For us, it seemed that that the problem extended to each website on the
particular server. It seemed to have been the Front Page lock files that
were the cause. Articles on the web mostly point to the lock file having
somehow gotten corrupted. Tow likely causes: 1) The publishing process was
somehow interrupted, and 2) network connection was somehow lost. We have not
been able to confirm either of these possibilities occurred.

Articles also seem to mostly say "delete the lock" files as resolution but
we could not because the files were locked (by an unidentified process). The
FP lock files in our case were in three locations, so we're not sure which
was causing the problem.
1. C:\program files\Microsoft Front Page\version 3.0\servsupp\servers.cnf.
2. C:\program files\Microsoft Front Page\version 3.0\temp\frontpg.lck
3. \\servername\website-sharename\wwwroot\_vti_pvt\service.lck.

I personally did not try this, but you may have success using FileMon from
SysInternals (<<http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html>> very
useful utility if you're not familiar with it. You'll love it...). You
might also have some luck with Process Explorer (Good utility but I'm much
less familiar with it.

Seems we are having a similar issue.....I just posted my problem (which also
included the error telling me consistantly that the extensions weren't
installed, but it was confirmed over and over by the techies that they were)
now I can't open the site in FP at all......it just hangs with the hourglass!
Hoping between your post and mine Kathleen or someone can help!

Can you check both machines and tell me if either or both are up-to-date

Hello,

We run NT/IIS 4.0 and use Front Page 2002. The editors for one of our
intranet sites suddenly cannot open a website in Front Page and we cannot
figure out why. I don't have much experience with Front Page so I'm not
sure
how to troubleshoot this issue. NTFS permissions appear correct and
unchanged. There are reports that FP extensions are not in place for this
site, however, the FP Server Admin program shows that the site has
extensions
in place and when I run a "Check & Fix", it comes back complete and
successful.

I am a local admin on this server and I can publish from FP. I'm not sure
how FP security and NTFS security combine to give the effective rights.

Can anyone help me understand FP security and how to troubleshoot security
issues?

Thanks in advance,

.
