Ron,
http://machine:8080 appears to display/work just fine
When I tried to publish to 'http://machine:8080', I could connect, but not
publish, reason given was invalid to a exeutable web (I then chg'd to script
only, still didn't work). However, if I publish to my internet host, the
forms work just fine. It looks like I still got something messed up.
I will try to re-write our thread here and post it as a new question.
Thanks for the help,
-Adam

The extensions are port specific. To use them on port 8080, they must.
be installed on port 8080.
To avoid the error in FrontPage, you must open the web in FrontPage,
then create the form. If you can open the web using
http://machine:8080 as the web address then the extensions are
installed.
Try running server health, and see if that makes a difference.
At this point I am at the limit of my knowledge of installing
extensions.

Ron.
Here is the latest (I did this prior to seeing your post).
- I created a new Web same level as Default
-- changed the port # (ex:8080) (dflt host, no IP# chg)
-- set FP extensions
- launched FP2003
- opened http://machine:8080
- appeared to open fine
- tried to add email addr, got error about extensions not loaded.
- I tried various other combo's, no luck.
Now, after thinking about it, is there something in my FP2003 that I
may
need to set. I was trying to figure out why I'm getting the error
in FP2003
prior to me even saving the page. I get the error (no server
extensions)
right after I set the form properties, which happens before I have
set up a
web in IIS.
What do you think?

No.
What you are doing is creating a virtual directory. FrontPage
extensions will not work (at least not in a straightforward manner)
with virtual directories.
Either, Open the default web site in FrontPage, then create a
subweb
for your web, and import the files from c:\web\thisweb
or better, open IIS MMC and create a new server, and choose
C:\web\thisweb as the root directory. You will either have to use
Host Headers for this web, or add a new IP address to the server,
and
use the new IP address. Then extend the web and configure the
extensions.

I'm not at my machine at the moment, but... I did a rt click, on
the default
web site, new virtual directory. I would then point it to the
same
directory
(c:\web\thisweb) that FP2003 points to. Is this what you mean by
*in*? If
so, any other thoughts?
Is there another way to create the subweb or do I actually need
to
create it
from FP2003?
Thanks in advance,
-Adam

No, sharepoint does not need to be installed.
One thought - if your web is in a Virtual folder then that may
be
why
the extensions do not work. The folder has to be *in* the
default
web
(as a subweb) for it to appear as a folder in the default web.
To avoid using a subweb set up a virtual server, not a virtual
folder.

I forgot to mention:
- Server Extensions are 'Allowed'
- I also tried to 'Allow' all of those available
- I also restarted the server after each change
- Server roles: File, Application (NOT MAIL, I point to my
Internet
connection's SMTP server)
However, I do NOT believe that I have SharePoint installed
(unless I
chose
by accident). Does this have to be installed?
I will also try to move my web. I've had bad luck when I have
tried
to move
it out of the Default web.
Thanks in advance,

Windows Server 2003 is a locked down environment, and, for
websites,
everything you use has to be enabled first.
On the server, open IIS MMC (Start->Administrative
Tools->Internet
Information Services (IIS) Manager) and expand the folder
tree.
Open the folder Web Service Extensions, and ensure that
FrontPage
Server Extensions is allowed. If not, click on the item and
click
the
Allow button. (You may have to click the Extended tag to see
the
Allow button.)
Close IIS MMC.
Start->Administrative Tools->Microsoft Sharepoint
Administrator
The opening page gives a list of all websites on the server,
check
that your site is on the list, and it has either Extend or
Administration link. If the link is Extend, then server
extensions
have not been installed - click Extend to install the
extensions.
If
there is a version number for your web starting with 6.x,
then
you
have a Sharepoint Services web, not a FrontPage Extensions
web.
Otherwise, click Administration.
On the next page, click Go to Administration for websitename,
login
if
necessary.
Scroll down to Server Health, and run Check Server Health,
and
allow
all checks and repairs.
This should correct whatever is wrong. It is possible that
opening
the web as a disc based web has corrupted part of the
extensions.
FYI, on Windows 2003, I never use the default web, always
leaving
it
as set by Windows IIS installation, and create virtual
servers
for
all
my sites.
A rough guide to setting up the SMTP server and configuring
extensions
for SMTP can be found at www.rxs-enterprises.org/fp/b/smtp/
Note: where you see click on Virtual Servers -> Default web
site
Administration
click on your own website instead of the Default web site.

Ron,
I can't seem to post a new question, so I'll try a reply
here.
- Win2003 Server w/ FP2003 and 2002 Extensions installed
- Email set up through administration appears to be set..
(correctly
??)
- 'thisweb' is set up as a virtualy web under default web
- I do get the component error message in FP2003
I'm also getting this problem, and I can't get it to go
away.
I've
always
opened as 'disc based', pointing to c:\web\thisweb. Your
response
indicates
that this is an incorrect way if I want to test my forms.
For
kicks
I tried
to open http://machinename/thisweb, but it failed as not
found.
Am I just simply missing something obvious or is it
something
else?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

A server based web is one you open using an http://

A disc based web is one you open in FrontPage using a file
system
location, such as e:\mywebs\webname.
This is still a disc based web even if it is used by the
web
server
as
the source of the finished website.
You can build webs in FrontPage using either system, but
for
testing
(or running the web) you must be using a server based web
if
the
site
includes any FrontPage run time components, such as hit
counter,
guestbook, discussion web, custom linkbars, forms (that
use
the
extensions as a form handler).
Also, any web that uses run-time components must either be
built/edited on a server (using the http:// address to
open
the
web
in
FrontPage) or published to the server using http
publishing,
not
FTP.
You will have to configure the extensions for SMTP since
you
have a
form in the web that sends data through email.
