Thanks for your reply.

Well, no I haven't read all the readme files (look of shame on face), but I
didn't read them before either and creating VS ASP.NET projects worked fine
before. But, I guess I'll go read them now. To answer your other
questions:

Yes, I do understand that the "right-click".. "Open in Front Page" isn't
directly related to Visual Studio, but it seemed like a related symptom.

_vti_bin does exist and it does have "scripts and executables" as the choice
for Execute Permission

I can open http://localhost/localstart.asp in my web browser. It also opens
http://localhost/iishelp/iis/misc/default.asp (which is where I guess I
should start reading?).

Trying to create an ASP.NET project in Visual Studio pointing to
http://localhost/WebApplication1 the exact error message is as stated: "Can
not find components for communicating with the Front Page extensions." I
guess the obvious question is what components does it need? What is it that
it can't find?

The fact that I can't do an "Open in Front Page" with my default web with
the error "You need to install the FrontPage client software to open a Web
with FrontPage". And the fact that Visual Studio can't seem to find some
components to communicate with FrontPage seems to indicate that something is
wrong with the FrontPage setup, but it is installed and it runs fine. I
guess the two things could be completely unrelated. Please give me more
input if you've got it. Thanks again.
