With every new PC that I have bought, I start by formatting the hard drive
and re-installing from scratch. This avoids dealing with all the OEM crap
that places like Office Depot and Staples squirt onto the machine. Dell is
much better, but still has a bunch of useless junk running.
You mention that your friend's problem started a few weeks ago. This leads
me to believe that one of you has infected the other with something nasty.
