Hay Chris!
I like the php look much better so far.
I probably will try to install it myself...what's the worst that could happen...my machine (or brain) will implode right? No harm either way.
I would install it in a subweb if it will work that way - i always like to keep that kind of thing separate if possible.
Use: To replace a High School Alumni forum that I've been hosting on Delphi for a zillion years. I want more control and less cost for the alumni (or whatever the plural is suppposed to be). A fair amount of users, maybe 1000, but there's never to many posting or reading at a time maybe 10-30.
Yah I've seen the aspportal thing - I gotta keep cost down since no one pays me to run this one, it comes out of my weekly lunch allowance :-)
the quest continues...
Thanks,
Rob

| crash,
| trust me the php/ my sql stuff isn't so bad. usually with an my sql
| database your host will give you administration through the php my admin
| utility. it's easy to work with.
| I'd make a FrontPage subweb and put all the files from the bb software's
| .zip into it. you can edit and publish with FrontPage.
| there should be a script in the distro for the forum that has a script to
| set up your db tables.
| $50 is a little high, you should be able to do it yourself in an hour or
| less.
| I know I could, and I'm no guru. ;-) I got a php nuke up and running with
| FrontPage.
|
| btw what are you looking to use it for? there's a great "portal" nice and
| simple here:
| http://aspportal.net it's got a "forum" of sorts built into it. it's super
| FrontPage compatible.

| hehee.. dunno how/why they run phpbb with access but they said they did.
|
| at least either one will get me started while/if I decide to learn MySQL.
| Actually I have another Linux host that has MySQL for free, but I really
| wanted to try Windows server this time around.
|
| You probably found my site, just a construction sign for now. I finally
| committed to redoing my old site and moved it to windows server - now I'm
| forced to get motivated. However that's not the site that will use the
| forum, but it is the same host the forum website will be on too - I'm
| waiting for dns transfer to go through for the forum site...the aussie
| registrar is a tad slow on that one.
|
| Welp.. thanks again!

| | I've never heard of anyone using phpbb with Access...kind of blasphemous,
| I
| | believe. :)
| |
| | The plus side of using an Access file is that it should be easier to
| backup.
| | Copy down the .mdb and you're done. That said, I still prefer to use
| MySQL.
| | Others will say otherwise, but I just don't have confidence in using
| Access
| | for anything other than a desktop database. (Please, direct all flames
| and
| | holy wars to dev@null.)
| |
| | I just checked with who I _think_ is your host (ala whois) and verified
| that
| | they do charge a monthly fee for MySQL. Based on that, I'd say definitely
| | go with the Access back end. :) But if you ever switch hosts, and if you
| | have any confidence with SQL (the language) then using MySQL is pretty
| | straightforward.
| |
| | For the purposes of the forums, you shouldn't need to do much directly in
| | the database to get your forums online. All the maintenance and admin
| take
| | place in the phpbb interface. As for Snitz vs. phpbb, I've only used on
| | Snitz forum that I can recall and I didn't like it as much as the phpbb
| | sites I frequent. Then again, Snitz is used on a lot of sites so my
| | uninformed opinion may not be the best yardstick to measure by.

| |
| | The plan I'm on comes with MS Access standard, and PHP & ASP also.
| | They say that PHPBB or Snitz will run with Access ok. I think they do
| charge
| | extra for any of the sql dbs. They will install either PHPBB or Snitz for
| | onetime fee of 50.00 - no extra monthly - or I can install it myself (hmmm
| | can I or will I?? )
| |
| | Point is that I can get around in Access, but know nothing about any of
| the
| | sql dbs at all. So if either will work with Access ok...then it's just
| | deciding whether to go with an ASP or PHP type forum. Snitz is not bad but
| | doesn't look as nice as the phpbb ones do.
