You don't really close it, as far as I've experienced. At the bottom of the
window are several tabs. Just choose Folders to get back to editing your
files.
The connection is only open as long as you are publishing, unless you've
actually opened your site on your ISP's server (which doesn't sound like
what you're doing). I had to retrain myself on that one, too.
